Relaxed coach sees big future for Dolgopolov

December 26, 2011 12:00AM

WITH the sun mid-sky on a brilliant blue day in Melbourne last week, Jack Reader strolled from the Albert Park courts looking more like a rock star than an elite tennis coach.

With his unruly dark locks barely constrained by a cap from the Port Elliott Tennis Club about 80km south of Adelaide, Reader dumped his racquet, reached for a cigarette and inhaled the scent of snags from a nearby barbecue.

It is not what would be expected from our Davis Cup coach Tony Roche, for example, but Reader is atypical in the tennis game despite being the coach of world No 15 Alexandr Dolgopolov. He would probably be unusual in any game where financial riches can be decided by a millimetre.

It is hard to imagine Reader, who described himself as a high-class bum when Dolgopolov surged into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, identifying with the batting camp that our struggling Test players were called to across the botanical gardens at the MCG, for example.

Chatting to The Australian over a coffee as Dolgopolov slugged it out with a hitting partner, Reader discussed everything from the shark attacks in Western Australia to the brilliance of meat barbecued in South America before the talk turned to his charge.

There should be no doubting the nous of Reader, an Australian who toured the globe as a fun-loving journeyman and later worked as a pub operator in New Zealand and model for an ANZ banking commercial before turning to coaching, because he has moulded Dolgopolov into one of the most exciting players in the world.

It is not uncommon for a player to make rapid ranking inroads in a season and then stall, partly because they have more points to defend the following year but also because opponents know more of their strengths and weaknesses.

But Reader, who spent much of his childhood in Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, is confident Dolgopolov will continue to rise.

"There is no defence, just attack. He still has a lot of improvement in him," he said. "When we first started, all I tried to do was get him healthy because as far as striking the ball goes, I can only learn from him. I know what he can do, and start to plot what he can add into his game, what he can use a bit more. All that comes with experience, which makes you a better player by knowing what you can do out there."

Dolgopolov is whippet-thin. While taller than Rafael Nadal, the Ukrainian is more twig than tree trunk in build, yet Reader has no plans to send him to a gym, given the power he already generates off the ground.

"We don't do weights -- it's only a little yellow thing he's hitting," Reader said. "It's not like footy where you've got to give a knock, take a knock. He'd be bounced all over the show in football. But if you're timing is right in tennis, the impact is not so bad. It's only a little yellow ball after all."

Dolgopolov begins his assault on the top 10 as the third seed behind Andy Murray in the Brisbane International from Sunday, and then plays for, ahem, Australia with Pat Rafter in the World Tennis Challenge in Adelaide the week before the Open, with Reader preferring its more relaxed atmosphere to tournament play in the Sydney International.

"I'm really happy with that because I have a lot of time for Pat," Reader said. "It will be a lot of fun. Obviously everyone really wants to win, but it's no big deal and the crowd's there to watch some fun tennis."

Part of Reader's confidence that Dolgopolov, whose most recent grand slam performance was a loss to Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 at the US Open, will not stagnate next season is due to the inconsistency of his performance through this year.

While he was brilliant on occasion and claimed a title in Croatia, he fell in the first round 11 times. Not helping was that the right-hander fell ill with pancreatitis following the tour swing through Indian Wells and Miami in March, with Dolgopolov winless through the first four clay court events as he struggled.

"He couldn't eat, couldn't digest. That was tough," Reader said. "He ended up losing first rounds at Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid and Rome, and three of those are big tournaments. By Wimbledon he was spent. Exhausted."

Dolgopolov headed to South America last year for a string of claycourt events after his breakthrough in Melbourne, but Reader said the plan this year is to reduce tournament play and focus on preparing for the majors.

Since September, boyhood friend Dimitry Brichek has been travelling with the pair as a hitting partner. Reader put Brichek through a fortnight-long boot camp in South Australia to bring him up to a level good enough to ensure Dolgopolov is working hard during his practice.

Raonic bursts onto scene in 2011‏

Updated Dec 26, 2011 11:08 AM ET

Welcome to the 2011 Year in Review. Beginning Dec. 20, in a time frame just shy of a fortnight, FOXSports.com's panel of tennis commentators — Richard Evans, Greg Couch, Brian Webber, Addie Rising and Tim Blankemeyer — will share their thoughts on the topic of the day. So check back each day to catch one final look back at a memorable year in tennis.

TO CONTINUE OUR YEAR IN REVIEW, WE ASK . . . WHO WAS THE BREAKTHROUGH PLAYER OF THE YEAR?

[...]

WEBBER: The toughest challenge for any tennis player is to crack the top 10 and contend for a Slam. Alexandr Dolgopolov is poised to take that giant leap in his career in 2012. The Ukrainian made a big move in the rankings vaulting from No. 48 in January to No. 15 at the end of the season, while capturing his first ATP singles title on clay in Umag, Croatia. Dolgopolov's father is a former pro who taught his son the subtleties and nuances of tennis at a young age. In an era dominated by big hitters, few players can match Dolgopolov's variety of shots and angles. His ability to change pace served him well in reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, upsetting fourth-seeded Robin Soderling along the way. That could be foreshadowing even bigger things to come in the coming year.

Countdown To 2012 - Names To Look Out For

by ATP Staff | 27.12.2011

As part of our 'Countdown to 2012' series, ATPWorldTour.com profiles the rising stars who will look to make their mark in the upcoming season.

The Australian Open has a tradition of setting the stage for burgeoning ATP World Tour stars to make their breakthrough. Remember Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2008? What about Marcos Baghdatis lighting up the court in 2006?

Canadian Milos Raonic announced himself on the world stage in Melbourne this year, qualifying into the main draw before beating World No. 10 Mikhail Youzhny to reach the fourth round (l. to Ferrer). The 20 year old went on to be voted 2011 ATP World Tour Newcomer of the Year after winning his first title at the SAP Open (d. Verdasco) in San Jose and finishing on the verge of the Top 30.

Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov was another star to emerge at the first major tournament of the year, beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Robin Soderling to reach the quarter-finals (l. to Murray). The enigmatic 23 year old would finish the year No. 15 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings after compiling a 38-29 match record, including winning his first ATP World Tour title at the ATP Studena Croatia Open in Umag (d. Cilic).

As the new season approaches, Raonic and Dolgopolov won’t be the only players looking to back up strong 2011 results. Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr., was named the 2011 ATP World Tour Most Improved Player of the Year after rising from No. 166 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings at the end of 2010 to a career-high No. 33 in November. At the age of 28, he compiled a 27-21 match record, eclipsing the total number of matches he had won on the ATP World Tour prior to this season.

Going into 2012 a host of rising ATP World Tour stars are poised to make their move in the South African Airways ATP Rankings. All eyes will be on leading Australian prospect, World No. 42 Bernard Tomic, who showed his promise with a run through to the 2011 Wimbledon quarter-finals (l. to Djokovic) as a qualifier. The Gold Coast teenager excited local fans in Melbourne last year with victories over two Top 50 players before falling in the third round to Rafael Nadal.

American Donald Young made his long-awaited mark at this year’s US Open, defeating Stanislas Wawrinka en route to the fourth round, before going on to reach his first ATP World Tour final at the PTT Thailand Open (l. to Murray) in Bangkok. The 22 year old finished the year a career-high World No. 39 and will look to continue his rise at the Australian Open.

Other names to watch out for in 2012 will be Bulgarian 20-year-old Grigor Dimitrov, who is still looking to transition his strong junior results to the professional tour; American teenager Ryan Harrison, who reached two ATP World Tour semi-finals this season; and German 21-year-old Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, who finished the year a career-high World No. 81 after winning the inaugural ATP Challenger Tour Finals in Sao Paulo (d. Sela).

Ukrainian fit for strong showing

December 28, 2011 1:00AM

HE was the surprise packet of the 2011 Australian Open.

Now Alexandr Dolgopolov plans to cash in on his new standing in the game. The Ukrainian, ranked 15th in the world, will be the No.3 seed behind Andy Murray and Gilles Simon at the Brisbane International starting on Sunday. There he will ramp up his preparations for the first major of 2012.

"I'm pretty fit for the year and it will be a nice start for the Open to get some matches here," Dolgopolov said before his second training session in the space of a few hours at Queensland Tennis Centre yesterday.

A year ago, Dolgopolov started the Brisbane event ranked 48th and he bowed out in the second round to finalist Andy Roddick. But, after a quarter-final appearance in Sydney, Dolgopolov made his mark at the Australian Open, brushing aside the highly rated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Robin Soderling before losing in four sets to eventual runner-up Murray in the last eight.

"At a grand slam, always the players are serious and they go out and try to show the maximum they can so it's tough," Dolgopolov said. "It depends on the draw. It would be nice to get the same result or even better."

And the 23-year-old is happy to be more the hunted than the hunter this time around.

"I have an advantage now in the rankings, so I don't play the top seeds in the first or second round," he said. "Of course with the top players they pretty much know me now but still I think I'm developing, getting better, so I hope this year will be better for me."

Troubled by illness during the middle of the season, Dolgopolov recovered to win his maiden title in Croatia in July and reached the fourth round at the US Open, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic. No longer having to chase points to boost his ranking, he will change strategy this season. Rather than heading to Sydney for the final warm-up ahead of the Australian Open, which starts on Monday, January 16, he will play the hit-and-giggle World Tennis Challenge in Adelaide.

"It's going to be really nice, it's not too much stress before the Open," Dolgopolov said.

Dolgopolov into Brisbane International second round

(AFP) – 1 day ago

BRISBANE, Australia — Third seed Ukranian Alexandr Dolgopolov fought off a determined Alejandro Falla of Colombia to reach the second round of the Brisbane International on Sunday.

Dolgopolov took the first set in a tiebreak then overpowered the Colombian in the second to ease to a 7-6 (7/3), 6-2, win.

The 21-year-old Ukranian enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2011, beginning by reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and finishing ranked 15th in the world.

Simon, Dolgopolov Secure Brisbane SF Spots

by ATP Staff | 05.01.2012

World No. 12 Gilles Simon secured his place in the Brisbane International semi-finals on Thursday as he defeated Santiago Giraldo 7-6(2), 6-4. The second-seeded Frenchman was broken twice, but converted three of his eight break points to claim victory in one hour and 48 minutes.

The 27-year-old Simon won two ATP World Tour titles last season, lifting trophies at the Apia International Sydney (d. Troicki) and the bet-at-home Open - German Tennis Championships 2012 in Hamburg (d. Almagro). He is bidding to win his 10th career title this week on his second visit to Brisbane.

Simon will aim to reach the final when he takes on Alexandr Dolgopolov on Saturday. The No. 3 seed knocked out 2009 champion Radek Stepanek 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance.

The Ukranian won 59 per cent of his second serve return points, breaking the sixth-seeded Stepanek five times. He wrapped up the two hour and 16 minute victory on his second match point against the Czech’s serve.

Dolgopolov, holding a career high South African Airways ATP Ranking at No. 15, is seeking to win his second title after triumphing at the ATP Studena Croatia Open in Umag (d. Cilic).

«Je me déplace tellement mieux. C'est une énorme partie de mon jeu et quand je bouge bien, le reste de mon jeu va bien et il était difficile pour Bernard de frapper un bon nombre de coups gagnants propres.»

Alexandr takes a leap of faith

Tuesday 3 January 2012

It’s pre-season for an international tennis star – Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov – done Port Elliot style.

Welcome to “Camp Dolg”.

While most of the world’s top-100 players spend their off-seasons working out in fully equipped gymnasiums, Alexandr Dolgopolov hits the rocks, sand and surf of the beach.

It’s unorthodox but ultimately effective, with the 23-year-old Ukrainian rocketing to No. 15 in the world rankings this season.

Dolgopolov and his Adelaide coach Jack Reader rented a house at Horseshoe Bay in December for their annual training camp ahead of the Australian summer.

The Advertiser photographer Simon Cross was invited to a typical training day with the pair which involved plenty of hard work but not a dumbbell or bench press in sight.

“From Horseshoe Bay you can jump straight down on to the rocks, into the water then be back up for a hot shower,” Reader said. “It’s perfect.”

Dolgopolov, who stands a nimble 183cm and 73kg, scales the rocks at Port Elliot like he has scaled the ATP rankings in recent years.

Since Reader took over as coach in 2009, Dolgopolov has gone from a top-300 player to top-20.

“We do various exercises on the rocks, running and climbing which is really good for your core strength,” Reader said. “And you’re using your whole body and balance.”

If the rocks are for strength, the water and sand are for fitness.

“We do strides in the water to lengthen the muscles and there’s no stress on the joints,” Reader said. “And because the water is fairly cold it ices him down a bit. On the sand is soft impact running and a lot of changing directions. Last year we had a few back niggles and a lot of guys are getting them now so this is running without the hard impact. I devised it from growing up running around on the sand dunes. A lot of country kids are fit and strong because that’s what they do.”

Dolgopolov started his 2012 campaign with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Alejandro Falla, from Columbia, in the first round of the Brisbane International played on Sunday.

After the tournament he returns to Adelaide to contest the World Tennis Challenge with Australian Davis Cup captain Pat Rafter before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Open.

Melbourne Park is the scene of Dolgopolov’s greatest Grand Slam result where last year he reached the quarter-finals.

“I’m happy with where he’s at. It’s been about building his base fitness and we’re slowly upping it but he needs to play matches now,” Reader said.
