Heather Watson into AEGON Classic round two

06/06/2011

Heather Watson is into round two of the women's singles at the AEGON Classic after a 6-3, 7-5 round one win.

The new British No.2 is now ranked 93 in the world after the latest WTA rankings were published and upset the 15th seed and world No.65 Chanelle Scheepers on Centre Court on Monday.

"Really good," said Watson when asked how she found her match. "After a slow start I picked up my game and she started to make more errors, the ball wasn't bouncing too high so I had to stay low which I was able to do well."

"I'd never seen her before but I'd been told she was a fighter and wouldn't give up but I got through it."

The 19-year-old Briton found herself 1-3 down shortly after the match started but began to cut out her unforced errors, forcing more mistakes from her opponent, and went on to win seven games in a row to hold a 6-3, 2-0 lead.

The South African world No.65 broke back when Watson served for the match at 5-4 only for the Briton to break again and seal victory in the 12th game of the second set.

Watson will now play either Misaki Doi (JPN) or Edina Gallovits-Hall (ROU) in the second round.

The first match on Court 1 saw British wild card Samantha Murray, from Altrincham, lose out 7-5, 6-1 to Anna Tatishvili of Georgia in her first ever match at WTA International level.

"It was a good opportunity," said Murray reflecting on the match, "It's good to learn how to compete at this level. Everything's a lot tighter and in the end I think it just came down to the fact she's more experienced than I am.

"I like the grass, it suits my game as I can be aggressive. Now I'm going to try and get a Wimbledon wild card in the play-offs."

Other winners in the first few matches on day one were Mirjana Lucic, who defeated American qualifier Alexandra Stevenson 6-3, 7-6(7), and Olga Govortsova, who came through a three set match against Romina Oprandi, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

There were also straight sets wins for two Russians over two French players as Alla Kudryavtseva, the No.16 seed, beat Alize Cornet 7-6(2), 6-1 and Arina Rodionova beat Virginie Razzano 6-4, 6-4.

Heather Watson strides on in Birmingham

08/06/2011

Heather Watson has moved into the last 16 of the women's singles at the AEGON Classic after a 6-2, 6-4 win against Misaki Doi of Japan on Wednesday.

The British world No.93 dealt with rain interruptions and a slow start to come through in straight sets on Centre Court earlier today.

"My serve was my saviour today," said the 19 year old after her win, "it worked really well. I was really relieved when the match was over as it was close at the end but then after it sunk in I was very pleased to have come through. I made too many unforced errors which got me into a bit of trouble at the beginning of both sets, but I learnt from the first few games and stayed strong and mentally tough."

In round three Watson will face the world No.20, Shuai Peng of China, who was given an almighty scare by British world No.231 Naomi Broady in the final match on Court 3. Broady recovered from dropping the first set to take the second on a tie-break and move 4-1 ahead in the final set before the third seed kicked into gear and won the match in the third set tie-break, triumphing 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-6(2).

Watson went on to say how she's looking forward to a rematch with Peng: "I played her in Auckland and I lost in the quarters, but I was pretty tired, having come through three rounds of qualifying and another three of main draw to get there.

"I know how she plays a bit so it will be nice to give it another crack. I believe in myself, I'll go in tomorrow with confidence and will give it my best shot."

Elsewhere on day three there was a strong win for Ana Ivanovic, the second seed, who beat Anna Tatishvili of Georgia 6-1, 6-0, and Sabine Lisicki, who overcame Kirsten Flipkens in a tight two setter, winning 7-5, 7-6(3).

Two other second round matches went to three sets as Errani (ITA) [7] beat McHale (USA) 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 and Tamira Paszek upset the sixth seed Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

There was also a doubles win for top seeds Huber & Raymond who beat Radwanska & Rodionova 6-2, 6-4.

Elementary for Watson

Last Updated: June 8, 2011 9:42pm

Broady denied all-British tie as Peng hits back to win. Heather Watson marched into the third round of the AEGON Classic at Edgbaston with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Misaki Doi of Japan.

The British number two, who will enter Wimbledon ranked in the world's top 100 for the first time, overcame the Japanese, ranked 133, with some ease.

It looked like Watson would play fellow Brit Naomi Broady for a place in the last eight as the British number five moved up a break in the deciding set against Shuai Peng of China.

However, the world number 20 broke back at a crucial moment and Broady, who had fought back from 4-1 down in the second set to force the decider, went down in the tie-break to lose 6-2 6-7 7-6.

Second seed and former world number one Ana Ivanovic made short work of Georgia's Anna Tatishvili, requiring just 44 minutes to claim a 6-1 6-0 win and move into the third round.

Nor were there any problems for fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova, who brushed aside Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-3 on a day which saw a number of notable seeds knocked out.

Sixth ranked Russian Ekaterina Makarova went out 6-4 3-6 6-4 to Austria's Tamara Paszek, 11th seed Yaroslava Shvedova lost 7-6 (9-7) 7-5 to Marina Erakovic, and ninth seed Ayumi Morita was also beaten

Watson keen on chances
Teenager looking to go all the way at Wimbledon

Last Updated: June 18, 2011 4:20pm

British number two Heather Watson is heading into Wimbledon believing she can become the first home winner in 34 years.

The 19-year-old has made giant strides over the past 18 months and broke into the world's top-100 for the first time last week. She has reached the quarter-finals of events in Auckland and Memphis while breaking Britain's 17-year wait for a woman to claim victory in the main draw at the French Open. And she is not short of self-belief as she prepares to get her Wimbledon campaign under way against Mathilde Johansson of France.

Target
"My ambition is to be world number one and to win a grand slam, and Wimbledon is the number one target. I'm sure I can win it one day," she said. "There is no point in me going into Wimbledon not thinking that I can win it. If I did that I might as well pack my bags and go home. This is what I train for. Winning it is my aim. I believe in myself. I have the athleticism and the mental strength to do it. I just have to keep improving every day. I have been working really hard over the last year. Over the last year my ranking has gone up from 500 in the world to the top 100 and I feel on form now and I'm very excited about it."

Experience
Watson warmed up for Wimbledon with appearances in Birmingham and Eastbourne, where she was over-powered by two women ranked in the world's top 20. She lost to China's Peng Shuai at Edgbaston before losing to world number three Vera Zvonareva on the south coast. Despite failing to take a set in either match, Watson is sure that the experience of playing against such esteemed opposition will help her in the long run.

"I thought I played well against Peng Shuai. I lost but I felt I was right there competing with her throughout the match," said the 2009 US Open junior champion. "There were only a few points that I wasn't happy with but it has given me a lot of confidence and I'm feeling really good now. I will have to beat these people to achieve my goals. When I was playing Zvonareva I felt that my game was pretty similar to her game. At the start I was a little nervous as I didn't know how hard she would hit, but now I have a feel for it."
